About Bodrum
Bodrum is one of Europe's top locations for property investment and holiday homes. Popular since the early 1980s with package tourists from all over the world, Bodrum has resisted the pressure to build high and has instead spread out to neighbouring villas in adjacent bays. This extended Bodrum is one of the largest holiday resorts in the Eastern Mediterranean and in the high season satellite resorts such as Bitez and Gumbet are a magnet for young sophisticated Europeans, devoted to the hedonistic pursuits of sun, sea, sand and dancing. For a more traditional Turkish atmosphere one can visit Bodrum old town and many of charming surrounding resorts.
Despite its popularity, Bodrum remains one of the prettiest tourist resorts in Turkey. The old part of Bodrum town, with its whitewashed stone buildings draped in bright bougainvillea and fragrant honeysuckle, retains a bohemian atmosphere, while the yachting fraternity love the myriad of rocky coves and sandy beaches nearby. This aspect of Bodrum is ideal for those who prefer a more sedate, relaxing environment. The pretty villages of the secluded bays around Bodrum offer villas and small apartment complexes beside the water's edge, and laid-back bars and restaurants enhance the welcoming atmosphere.
Gümbet and Bitez, where the wind and sea are perfect for watersports, are magnets for those who enjoy windsurfing, Ortakent with its sandy beaches is the best choice for walking and Akyarlar is famous for its clear blue sea. There are three other pretty villages close to Bodrum, lying on the western end of the peninsula called Gumusluk, Turgetreis and Yalikavak all of which are well worth a visit. In all, the Bodrum peninsula offers something to please a wide audience with diverse tastes, and does so with great success.
